Chaperone Applications for the 2027 Exchange are due on March 31, 2026. On behalf of the Pendleton Cultural Foundation, thank you for your interest in chaperoning the students on the cultural exchange to Minamisoma, Japan. The chaperone will be the responsible adult traveling with up to six high school students to Japan for two weeks in July. The chaperone and students fundraise to pay for expenses related to the trip to Japan and to host the Japanese students in Pendleton. Once the group is in Japan, the bulk of the expenses, including meals and housing, are provided by our counterparts in Japan. The cultural exchange is an amazing experience to tour Japan, learn about Japanese culture, and live with a Japanese family. The trip includes a great deal of walking each day in high heat and humidity. The chaperone will also be expected to participate in some of the exchange activities in Pendleton when their group visits in mid-August; meeting the group, acting as a day-host, or hosting a student or their chaperone in a home-stay with your family.
The chaperone is responsible for the following:
- assisting in choosing the students for the program.
- preparing the students for the trip to Japan (travel, etiquette, language).
- coordinating the fundraising activities for the group.
- traveling with the students to Japan and overseeing them during the trip.
- responding to student problems or concerns while in Japan.
- participating in exchange activitie(s) in Pendleton.
- assisting the chaperone the following year.
The Pendleton Cultural Foundation board and past chaperones will support you in your efforts.
Selection preference will be considered for those candidates that have prior experience with our sister city program, either through assistance in prior fundraising, hosting, student preparation, and/or planning of the program. The chaperone will need to pass a background check prior to final approval.
